The color wheel is a template that helps us visualize the relationship between the different colors. Similar colors occupy nearby areas while complementary colors are in regions opposite circle.
Below we show two chromatic circles. In the first, a diagonal serves as a boundary line between cool and warm colors. In the second have been added brightness variations. If you want to know the steps to build a color wheel, click here.

The relationship established between the colors of a plastic composition can be mainly of two types: harmonic or contrast.
Harmony occurs when there is a common link between the colors, either because they share origins and therefore are close on the color wheel (red, orange and yellow, for example), or by participating in a common base (the pastel colors , for example, have a common link - the color white, which clarifies the various shades produce a sense of harmony). Harmony provides tranquility and is used very often in those plastic manifestations, as decoration or fashion, we live with for a long time.
The color contrast results from using opposite colors on the color wheel. With the juxtaposition of two completely opposing colors (magenta and green, for example) will result in the overall contrast. Advertising makes use of this form of composition because it attracts attention hard.  The main problem of the color contrast  is that, eventually, it tired the sight, especially if used saturated colors.
There is a relationship which is a combination of the two aforementioned . Is called harmonic contrast and uses the advantages of each of them. It is one of the most used color relationships in painting since the Impressionists that, in the nineteenth century provided us with excellent examples. It consists of using colors that are afar on the color wheel but trying to get that they to share something in common.

To make a composition with a harmonious contrast ratio the first thing we to do is look in the color wheel and choose the color scheme that we will use. The three great contrasts will be those occurring between green and magenta, cyan and red and yellow with blue-purple.
Imagine that we have chosen the first combination. We can't  put them together the two colors, because they do not satisfy the premise of having a common tone (the green has nothing to magenta and vice versa). But any of the colors that are near the magenta, both on the side of the purple, as to the side of the carmines do share something with green: the first cyan and the other yellow. We can also get dirty the green with a small amount of magenta, which will generate a tertiary color that do share something with the green. The colors blend in different proportions give us infinity of shades. The important thing is not to lose its way. That any person, when we will show our work, know without doubt, without hesitation, which of the three possible combinations we have chosen.
Here are a few works done by following these guidelines. The issue: The landscape.
